sun shower…
Posted in amsterdam, nature, pia's photos September 25th, 2010 by pia

This morning I woke up to a beautiful sun shower. The rain looked like tiny, thin light beams falling from the sky.

Yesterday I had an idea. I have a collection of beautiful things gathering here in my little boat home – sweet treasures that have been given or sent to me, and lovely pieces I’ve been meaning to show you for some time. So instead of letting them gather & gather in the hope that I find time to share their stories with you, I thought that starting next week, I will take a photograph of each item every day and post them here in the (blog)house. I won’t write about the item, I’ll just post a photograph and maybe share a link or two directing you to where the item came from.

Would you enjoy that? I hope so.

And here is something I came across via vanessa during the week which I thought was rather fabulous, funny and oh so true. I’ve printed it out and taped it to my wall as a reminder, you might get a kick out of it too (find it here).

Enjoy your weekend, mes amis.

australian artist: craig waddell…
Posted in artists, australia, nature September 17th, 2010 by pia

What Dreams May Come is a current exhibition of works by Australian artist Craig Waddell now on display at gallery 9 in Darlinghust, Sydney.  Craig’s oils on canvas and linen are breathtaking…

…I particularly love the proteas (here). I found Craig’s work via artwhatson: “Waddell’s exhibition at gallery 9 is heavily influenced by his every day life – painting in his studio in the middle of a rose farm at Glenorie, Sydney and working at the flower markets. His luscious paintings depict the beauty, emotion and organic forms of nature and their seductive titles reflect the erotically charged love poems of Chilean writer Pablo Neruda.”

Stunning.

jim denevan in siberia…

Last weekend I got lost in the world of Jim Denevan –  again –  but this time, in Siberia, via  The Anthropologist.  And although I was intrigued by the art, I became more intrigued by the journey and the landscape.  The stories told by each of the crew members is incredibly interesting, and learning about the pitfalls and the highs they experienced throughout the project was fascinating. The Anthropologist is an amazing website, and the way this special series of stories is put together is really special. Enjoy.

Romina Bacci is a talented graphic designer and photographer born in Argentina with Italian heritage, residing in the US. Her photography is ethereal and so very soothing, I’m thrilled to be able to share some of her work with here in the (blog)house today…

Romina is currently working on a few books that will be available to purchase in the future, they all look to be beautiful but I am particularly looking forward to de la mesa al alma which will feature a collection of photographs, family recipes, and stories gathered from her and her sister,  from days growing up in la cucina, watching and helping their nona make pasta all day…

I asked Romina if there was anything in particular that she wanted to share here along with her photographs, and I love what she had to say…

“Something I’d like to point out is how important it is for any artist, designer, photographer, writer to find our own voice, our own way of doing things, to find ourselves in our work. It is difficult to focus on what we want to do when out there is a vast ocean of inspiration, and I enjoy watching other artists’ work too, but I think it is very important to stop looking outside and start searching inside when it comes to creating our work. I believe this is priority, it’s a way of respecting others as well as respecting ourselves.”

from wing stories, Romina Bacci

I thought that was a beautiful sentiment and something I feel very strongly about too, it reminded me of this post about derivation which I wrote back in the very early days of my blog (can you believe it’s been 2 1/2 years since the (blog)house was built? Time has flown by ever since, what a whirlwind).

This series above is from Romina’s new marina, a sea collection available in her etsy shop, Miles of Light. The sea treasures featured in this series were a gift from her friend Sarah, a fellow graphic designer.

And these above are from her forest series: “our lives are like islands in the sea, or like trees in the forest, which co-mingle their roots in the darkness underground.”

Beautiful.

Thank you, Romina.

little drifters…
Posted in canada, handmade, hunter gatherer, nature July 27th, 2010 by pia

So there is this guy, his name is Lenny, and amongst other things he loves to comb beaches. With his findings he makes the sweetest little boats…

…are they not the most fabulous things you’ve ever seen? Anyway, he inspired Jeff from booooooom to host a community event in Vancouver this past Saturday where anyone and everyone could come along with their box of found beach/forest treasures to  make little drifters and set them sail on Trout Lake Beach. The event was then featured in The Vancouver Sun

The little drifters featured here are all Lenny’s, but check out booooooom and The Vancouver Sun to see what everyone made on Saturday, they are all awesome.

I also thought this could be lovely inspiration for those of you participating in poppytalk’s collecting nature flickr pool. Wouldn’t this make a great project? I think I don’t even have to ask, or answer,  that question.

I have to do a summer clean up inside my houseboat this week because it’s just getting too cluttered, perhaps with my dried up flowers and collected bits of wood I can make some little drifters and send them off on the canal. If I do, I’ll take some photos to post here in the (blog)house – that idea is pretty much the only thing inspiring me to tidy and clean.

xx

PS I had a really great weekend, I hope you did too. I’ll tell you about mine a little later, for now I’d just like to daydream some more about these little drifters.

PPS I found out all of the above from dear Erin at Design for Mankind. She always knows about the good stuff.
