So here she is, our little girl, born at 6:30am on Valentine’s Day. She came into this world strong and determined, just like I felt she was in the womb. Her name is Laly (pronounced lah-lee) – it’s a French name Romain and I picked out many months ago but we wanted to meet her first to be sure it was right, and as soon as we saw her we knew that she was indeed our little Laly…
This has been an incredibly intense journey from the very beginning – the pregnancy, birth, and these first two weeks of motherhood… what a ride, it’s like nothing I have ever experienced. Even though I’ve always admired and respected the mums of the world, I have a greater found respect for all mums past and present. This is one tough job. But just take a look at these photos, they are snippets of the glorious moments to be cherished…
Everyone tells me it gets easier and that by week 6 or so, routines can be established and sleep can be had. I am counting on it. And I’ve learnt this: If there is one way to be sure you are living in the moment, have a baby.
Wow, we are a family now: Valentine’s Day for us will always be when two became three.

Every baby is different and I was told the same thing that by 6 weeks things start to get easier. If only that was true for my case. It wasn’t until my little boy turned one that I could finally have a good nights sleep. But I must say after he turned one, everything was so much easier and from then on they grow up so fast that sometimes you wish they were still little babies. Mummyhood is definitely one tough job but you do get rewarded in kisses and hugs.

Pia, these are such great shots and really sum up the whole newborn experience. One difference though is that Laly is one incredible looking baby. Such amazing skin and beauty. It’s a roller coaster ride that’s for sure, it’s quite scary being responsible for someone so tiny. Remember, Super Mums are crazy. Baby steps is the way to go. Oh yes, those first months are intense. My own son was a tricksy night sleeper until he was 11 months old. While we didn’t get the magic transformation at 6 weeks (or 8 weeks or 3 months!), there were more subtle changes at play and my coping mechanisms improved! I wish for you that Laly quickly settles into a mutually beneficial rhythm, but don’t panic if it doesn’t happen as quickly as you hope!

Oh Pia, she is so sweet and I absolutely love the name Laly! When I saw that amazing pic of you nursing her, it brought me right back to those first weeks with my baby girl. It’s good to have people snap photos of real moments like that — I wish I had a few more pics of those moments in the beginning. It’s so true about being present in the moment. A good friend also told me to try not to think about how things will be easier when this or that happens. Because while it’s true that certain things get easier, your little pumpkin also changes by the hour and day and it’s good to cherish where she is right now. We are blessed with two beautiful girls. I find motherhood never gets “easier” because there are always new challenges 😉 but it does stay as beautiful, fulfilling and miraculous as it is now!

How incredible! Congratulations to all of you. It’s going to be one hell of a ride! Enjoy every moment, before you know it, she’ll be a teen. The only bit of advise my mom gave me was 1. get them into a routine asap. It was always bath, boob (later bottle), bed. To this day at age 10 and 11 my boys know it’s bed time after dinner and shower and 2. Never rush them. They will potty train, walk, talk, read and do all of those wonderful things when they are ready and indeed, it’s so much easier to go with the flow than push them into a pre conceived idea of when they should be doing when. Just relax and enjoy. Oh and to preserve your own sanity sleep when she sleeps. X

Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl, Laly. She is gorgeous. The early days are rough, but as the days go on, you start to pine for the days when you were their whole world. What a very special time this is. And something to look forward to is that as children grow and you start to look at the world through their eyes, the world becomes an exponentially more beautiful place. This has been my experience. How very lucky you are. 🙂

A much belated congratulations, but one that has double meaning since our daughter, Addie, was also born on Valentine’s day. She is now 9-1/2 years old and lives with us in Seattle (we adopted her from China in 2004). Congratulations once again. Cheers!
