…french boy and I swam in the ocean, bayside; sipped champagne; played crib in the shade of a eucalypt tree; ate chocolate; watched boats decorated with australian flags pass by; got muddy feet from walking through a small mangrove forest; and got colours, albeit a little too many.

Yesterday was my birthday. I share it with Australia. But sometimes on my birthday, I like not to share at all.

basket weaving on my mind…

How incredibly inspiring is this home of basket maker Harriet Goodall? Set in a small town near the beautiful Southern Highlands in New South Wales (Australia), Harriet and her husband Mat have set up home in this rented cottage and have filled it with all sort of found and handmade objects.

I’m not going to go into it further because Sohi magazine has the whole scoop here – I suggest you make a cuppa, and read every word.

Not to mention this new magazine Sohi looks completely wonderful and I really really want to get my hands on a copy – it has my ethos aaaaall over it. If anyone out there has copies, and you live in or near Sydney, could you save/collect them for me? I want to devour every page when I get back there. Perhaps I need to move to the Southern Highlands to get a copy. I will if I have to.

PS seriously thinking about basket making. Not that I need another project but wow, don’t you think it would be a fabulous hobby?

PPS if anyone knows more about Harriet Goodall (I can’t find her in the web), please tell me more, I’m very interested in her work.

anzac biscuits at my doorstep on anzac day…
Posted in australia, pia's photos April 25th, 2009 by piablog

today I came home to find that fellow aussie expat and dear friend Zoë had popped over with some home baked anzac biscuits for me and French Boy, in honour of anzac day. So so sweet. This little parcel made my day. Thank you Zoë.

Today is also my gorgeous goddaughter’s first birthday. She is having a little party tomorrow. She will be a ladybeetle for the day as my cousin has not only found the sweetest ladybeetle outfit for her, but even made a ladybeetle cake.

I will be there in spirit. Ladybeetle spirit, of course. Happy Birthday sweet baby girl.

nature calls

now I may have neglected to mention in my last post that Leslie has her very own etsy boutique. But I am letting you know right now, with this sublime photograph you see above, from her collection, and this one you see below, both available for purchase

The reason I neglected to mention this before is because Leslie has something special on offer that deserves a whole post of it’s own – for the rest of February, Leslie is donating $5 of each print purchased in her etsy boutique to wildlife victoria, a not for profit volunteer based organisation who are working ceaselessly in all fire damaged grounds in victoria, australia, performing search and rescue. Due to the recent devastation, hundreds of animals have been taken in for treatment and rehabilitation, with more coming in all the time…

left: i’m not sure where this image is from but it has done the rounds on emails in australia which is how it came into my inbox; right image from hyena in petticoats.

Leslie will also be waiving the shipping costs on her sales for the rest of the month, so now is a perfect time to purchase some of her beautiful work and help victoria’s injured wildlife.

Thank you dear Leslie. Our koalas, kangaroos, cockatoos, kookaburras, wallabies, wombats and plethora of other australian animals in danger will be so very very thankful. And I am more than touched to learn about your endeavour to help our precious wildlife.

update 20.2.09: for more information about the recent victorian bushfires, please read this brief article, watch this documentary from ABC 4corners, and to help further, please make a donation to the red cross, wildlife victoria, or donate something you’ve made by hand to handmade help. to donate goods, here is a list of drop off contacts around the country.

unfortunately at the same time last weekend, north queensland was under threat from floods. This is also an area of devastation, so to learn more about this and make a donation, please click here.
