a piece of brilliant literature
Posted in books October 22nd, 2008 by piablog

Remember a couple of weeks ago I was telling you about the book I had just started reading?

Well, sadly, I have finished it. And I reiterate, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is the most inspiring book I have read this year. Every single page is a literary piece of perfection in it’s own right.

I am so intrigued to visit Guernsey now – I want to walk along the clifftops like Juliet Ashton, I want to stand in a place where I can imagine her and Dawsey Adams having their moment. I want to see stone cottages dotted around the island, and wander along the shoreline skipping stones like Kit and breathing in the sea air. I want to find myself a little cottage by the seaside to write my own literary masterpiece.

The author Mary Shaffer, had a life-long dream to “write a book that someone would like enough to publish.” She did not live to see her dream come true as she passed away earlier this year. But if she were alive, I would write her a personal letter to tell her how much I enjoyed it.

Fabulous read, go get yourself a copy pronto if you haven’t already.

PS I have just started reading the so far hilarious My ‘Dam Life by fellow Australian + once upon a time Amsterdammer, Sean Condon. I’m up to page 37 and I have laughed out loud at least once per page thus far. I’m not sure it’s safe to admit that I actually relate to this guy and his crazy antics, but it’s the truth. And I’m all over that.

PPS I am about to add new books to the library in a few moments, so don’t forget to check’em out!

xx

It’s in my list, I want to wait until it’s in french 🙂 But I understand that so well, after reading Vonne Van der Meer books I want to go see the dutch island of Vlieland. I even get chills just by thinking of it 🙂

As it happens, I just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pie Peel Society last night – an enjoyable read. It has been compared somewhat to Helen Hanff’s 1970 classic 84, Charing Cross Road. If you haven’t read Hanff’s correspondance with Marks & Co booksellers between 1949 and 1969, please do. You’re in for a treat.

i too have just finished this book. i savored every page and tried to drag it out in fact. The funny thing was, that i had JUST finished reading EAT PRAY LOVE when you posted about Guernsey…. and was experiencing what i often do after reading a book that touches me so, i can’t imagine what to possibly follow it up with…your recommendation being so well timed, i instantly bought the book only to discover when it arrived, that the back cover is one big glowing review from elizabeth gilbert, author of eat pray love, its as if she was saying…you can move on from my book now, and THIS is the way to do it…

danielle, that is the most amazing example of synchronicity i have ever heard about! I’m so glad you enjoyed it too.

esti, tartelette, annie and oliveaux, i do hope you enjoy it as much as i did.

linda and sofia, i am going to track those ones down, thank you for mentioning them!

laura, oh that sounds great! I am about to head to France for the weekend, otherwise i would have put up my own hand to join you! I don’t know why or how it happens without fail, but everytime you or your daughter come here I go there, and vice versa. We must get out of this habit!!

Nadia, I hope you find it, I am pretty sure that you are going to love it.

I’m thrilled that you loved this book! My cousin Marianne wrote it, and sadly didn’t get to see it’s wonderful reception. Thank you so much for sharing it with your readers.
