Believe it or not, this is a Winter’s afternoon in ol’ Sydney, in my parent’s backyard. I took these photos at around 4pm, astounded myself, at how penetrating our light is down here. Back in The ‘Dam when I’m on shoots I talk alot about the light in Australia. Especially when I’m on food shoots as Australian food photography is the talk of the industry, and our Aussie food photographers are (amongst) the best in the world (hmm, can you tell I’m a bit proud?). Anyway, I tell everyone about the light and I describe it as “being so strong it even penetrates the walls”. French Boy laughs in disbelief, and thinks I am exaggerating but here is the proof in the puddin’, blossoms, check it out for yourself…
Need I say more…
D’accord, je ne me moquerai plus!

Yes, I feel the same way about Greece. The light is so crystalline and intense that you can almost see the individual photons scattered about. I love that light. I miss it.

Sydney looks fantastic. I wish summers in Seattle were like winters in Sydney.
Best wishes to your mom. I am sure your visit made her feel better.

I have a huge crush on the light in Australia and the purity of the food shots in Aussie magazines. You’re right, there is nothig quite like it! The shots with those greens and blues are wonderful!!

We’ve had good light these last few days. I went for a run yesterday arvo and came home to a sun dipping in the west, the golden arc of water and then that rose gold cast atop the hill of bushland that backs my house. Truly beautiful. I love that the light changes with seasons and that it’s different in the country than the coast. I thought I’d die for not seeing the dusk and dawn of Mudgee, where I’m from, but I haven’t and I’ve learned to appreciate the coastal light. Last night, well after the sun had dropped, the skyline to the west showed me a dark ridge against a silken blue sky that dropped to a burnt orange and then a soft yellow. There was one lone bright star.
