………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I’m very excited about the weather lately. Others may be complaining about the ‘heatwave’ but I could not be merrier. I nearly choked on my vegemite toast this morning when I heard the BBC warning viewers about the current heatwave in the UK… “temperatures could reach up to 30C” announced the newsreader.

Um, where I come from that’s called “summer”.

So needless to say I’m soaking in this sunshine like there’s no tomorrow. Amsterdam glistens when the sun shines. I would go so far to say that it’s the happiest city in the world when the sun is out. People’s smiles are broader, there is a spring in their every step, and life just feels like it could not get any better.

This is my third ‘summer’ for this particular european stint I’m on, but it is really only the first as the preceding two summers were ridiculous versions of the season. Last year I was in Sydney in August you may recall, and considering that is the peak of winter, it was by FAR hotter than the summer here in Europe. But that was last year! As we know life is all about the here. and. now.

When the weather is this warm, I am more Australian than ever. I find myself listening to midnight oil. and craving a glass of ice cold milo. I walk easier in my light summer dresses, and my feet are so happy to be carefree.

Most of all, when the weather is this beautiful, I crave water. I crave jumping off the jetty back home, getting splashed (or bashed) by waves, letting my feet play at the water’s edge.

Oh yes. I’m a happy girl when the sun is out. I know you’ve heard me say it again and again. and again.

I’m with you. I never realize how much I’ve missed the sun until it starts shining every day, and then I’m a very happy girl. Three cheers for sun!

Your post made me long for summer. Here where I live, we’ve had two solid weeks of rain with most days rather chilly. Even the warm days have been rainy, though, with an occasional peek or two at the sun. As I type this very moment, it is pouring put. Rain is splashing in the canal outside my open window, and the old bricks of the abandoned mill across the way are soaked a dark, quite beautiful red. I’m trying to find the beauty in all this soggy mess!

I love to dry out in the hot desert sun, in a hot tub with a steaming cup of coffee at high noon!…nothing better, except

make that a Greek desert island and a salted Sea, please.

Where I come from it gets up to like 35 C.

Yeah, I agree, I am a big summer person. This love for summer probably comes from the anticipation of camp, etc. Or maybe because I grew up in a place that was always hot {Florida}, but not officially summer until school was out.

Not a big fan of bundling up.

I love that last photo…There is nothing sweeter in summer than lying on the verge of water and listening to its lapping. Sweet.

Amsterdam sounds magical! I feel the same way, especially about light summer dresses. There’s nothing better than a summer dress. Enjoy your sun!!

    Hello Pia:)

I found something on the net that I think you would find at least funny. Remember the photo of your Paris apartment with written windows? I believe I found accidentally a version of your room or at least inspired by it for the sims2 game:)

It’s been very rainy here in New England, unusual for the season. People usually complain when it’s warm and humid but I love it. Thanks for sharing your joy about the sunshine- maybe it will eventually find its way here too. I’m curious- tell me more about the “milo”. What is it?

I think it’s only natural to have more of a spring in your step when the weather starts to warm. I think our climate is absolutely magical for at least three quarters of the year – particularly in Sydney.

You sound so much like me! Seattle doesn’t often get as warm as where I am from, but when the sun shines here, regardless of temperature, people are just happier! I think when you live in a place like this, you truly appreciate sunshine~

My BF and I saw the British warnings too, and we had to laugh a bit – and we’re west coast Norwegians, which basically means if we get anywhere near 25’C for more than two days in a row we can’t believe our luck.

I thought the same about the bbc weather. A little hysterical – they were saying things like “If you do start to feel unwell from the heat, go straight to the doctor” Straight to the park more like! (Though I felt sorry for non freelancers who spent most of the week in the tube which got up to 38 degrees I believe.) And last week when I went to Paris (carrying your book!) the bbc said it would be 23 or 24 and raining and it was a bleedin heatwave!
